"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated admirers have openly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes track departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound resilience called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But the band will consistently be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
